Rotarian Derek de Belder a 91 year old member of Wilmslow Dean Rotary made a hand painted bird box for his granddaughter during lockdown. Many people admired it so much that he decided to use his hobby to raise £200 for plants for Seashell Trust in Handforth which cares for children with severe and complex mental disabilities by selling his bird boxes for £20 each. His bird boxes have been so admired that he has continued making them.
Derek has surpassed the £200 target for the plants and with Rotarian Marianne Martyn helping to promote this venture Derek has orders now for over 80 boxes.
Not all will be completed for Christmas but Derek is continuing to make as many boxes as he, can raising valuable funds for Wilmslow Dean Rotary.
Dereks daughter Sue Evans a Nurse in Mobberley Care Home has been buying materials, undercoating, painting roofs and varnishing.
Derek is a Past District Governor and been awarded a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship with 5 Sapphires which is the highest Rotary recognition of outstanding humanitarian services.
This is shows the true spirit of what Rotarians can do especially in these difficult times.
